Default Underdrive Pulley? Hot or Not?

When I was driving a Ford Focus one of the first things to do was to stick a underdrive pulley on it. Course with most 2.0 l and smaller engines that aren't charged this a common mod. Have to say it did help with throttle lag especially when the A/C was on.

Is this something folks do regularly do on N/A 3.6 engines? See that they are available but I see more folks doing LWFW (yep..had that on the Focus too. That went on before the blower did.) than pulleys.

Course, given that I haven't had a ticket yet in the 911 why am I looking to make it quicker?

Try these guys for a custom crank pulley; they will make whatever you want cheap:

I got a pulley custom made for $200 for my Vortech SC from them, so should be roughly the same.

You are a riot....not.

It was hot. I have all confidence that a blown ZX3 could smoke most 996 C2/4 in a 1/4. I crossed it and dragged it here in NC. Took the blower off and drove it as my daily for a while. Kept it as a 4th car until my wife decided that 2 cars per person was too many. So I actually traded it in when I bought my 996. 155 whp in a econobox is dangerous on the street. Broke the heart of many a Mustang driver in a red light challenge.

Growing up here in the south I gravitated more towards drag racing. Didn't really get into road cars until a friend gave me a spot on his rally team as a backup driver. So in answer to your question, I gave it up because at 40 I can afford to buy what I want. Of course, I could buy what I wanted when I bought the Focus too. I wanted a street racer so I bought one.

Back to our regular scheduled post...

I know they are available. Just wonder if anyone has put one on a 996 3.6? And if so, have they seen any noticeable improvement?

"Leave it alone" my wife says from the other room. "Why didn't you just keep the Focus too if you wanted something to blow up?"

Underdrive pulley will barely make your car faster - maybe 3HP - if that. Most people that get one are track junkies, and it is used to keep the power steering pump from overworking and boiling the fluid. The only real benefit is for the track.

IIRC, requires power tools to install as you have to cut off part of the engine block for it to fit. Oh, and you will have low AC charging voltage if you get one.

In any event, Mantis, Tarett, and Raby both make them. The Tarett one comes with the tensioning tool. Raby will hook you up with anything you need as well - give him a call for the real guru answers.

These are even better than pulley mods:

Sounds like the answer to my question is no. Thanks for the advice.

I am fairly sure Marlon's comments were not intended to make you upset, and I am also fairly certain that your comment was over the line. I would suggest easing up a bit there - not every reply is going to answer every question, and a little poking here and there is for the most part meant as good humor only...

That's one of the more satisfying feelings when you have a car that everyone underestimates. I had an old VW GTi like that. It didn't look like much but I had the engine built up to deliver performance.

The Porsche is expected to be fast so no one is surprised when it performs well. But a "lowly" economy car can surprise quite a few when set up the right way.

After the first comment where I obviously didn't find his comments funny he shot back another lame comment. Maybe he didn't mean to annoy me, but he did and I expressed such. He chose to poke the bear again.

As far as my comment being over the line. I assure you it was a kind version of what I normal reserve for folks who seem more than willing to chime in with useless, punk comments but no helpful information.

I understand and appreciate your peacemaking. But if he takes offense, let him be a man and say so.

Actually I have seen quite a few folks act surprised that a 911 can get off the line. My son hangs out with a bunch of drag strip kids back home and the other week I shot down a few of them at the track with my 996. But it did make me want my old Torino drag car back.

Paul

You a C2 or C4?

I babied it a bit. I was actually trying to get the wheels to spin more but I guess the newness of my Sumitomo's made that a challenge. Plus they had just scrubbed down the track the day before.

(Dude flipped and rolled a Z28 body full on dragster about 4 runs later. 5th time the car had been launched. $100k down the drain. My son called me the next day and said a buddy of his had picked up the chute and they were going to try hook it up to a pickup truck. My son already has a broken foot so hopefully he won't be on the bloody thing.)

I think getting the HP in the 400 range would be key. Then a pair of 18x11 rears. Run some big ole fat 335/30ZR18 rubber in the back and I am guessing 12's will come easy.
