Oil Change Question
#2
As long as they know what they are doing, the indie should be fine, especially if they work on P-cars (i.e. using the correct oil, filter, etc.).
I'm not the best at DIY things, but I got all the stuff to change it myself. It appears pretty straight forward as long as you have the parts and the couple of necessary tools.

If you have it changed at an independent just make sure they're familiar with Porsches and service them fairly often--a generic oil change chain will probably do it right, but you can't be sure of it.
It's easy enough to do yourself, in fact it's the easiest car to change the oil on that I've ever owned, so you should really try it.

And remember that when you do your own oil change you are doing your car a good service... pun intended. But really the reason the dealer is so expensive is that the oil change is tied to the annual inspection which involves looking at this and that. Why pay for looking at this and that? Because they know WHAT to look at, what THAT is, and if it is still correct. A Porsche- experienced Indie can do the same thing. The question you have to ask yourself is if the factory recommends looking at certain things every so often, can you ID those things yourself, or will you ulitmately end up taking the car in for the Annual Inspection anyway. But, yes, an oil change (only) on a 996 is definately a DIY project and not a tough one. It'll give you a chance to see what is going on under there, as well. I'm certain that the procedure and part numbers are posted on the 996 Forum somewhere, and if that fails you can PM Gota911 and he will tell you where to find it.

Thanks guys! Im actaully leaning towards doing it myself after reading all the replies. Did some research and looks fairly easy enough and gives me a chance to get hands on with the car. Someone on a post just said they back it up on a ramp and did the oil change. Does the car being on incline affect it? Do I need to put anyting in front of the front tires for the car not to roll forward and crush me? Thanks guys!

Do the oil change on a flat surface. Also, make sure you oil catch pan is large enough to handle 9 qts of oil.
