Cool Thinking about a 997

I have been thinking pretty hard lately about getting a 997. My current 996 is now 10 years old, and want to step up (maybe) to some newer technology. So for several months I have lurked over on the 997 Forum to see what tidbits I could learn for my shopping pleasure.
WOW!!!! Those guys are VIOLENT over there!!!!!
I don't think I want to play with those guys. They are really MEAN to each other. I think I'll just settle back for another 10 years in my 996.

'05 Turbo is a completely different animal than the 996 or 997.1 . The '05 Turbo has an entirely different engine and suspension than the regular 996 on which it's bodywork was still based. It does not share the new bodywork or mechanicals of the '05 997. No reason to avoid them at all. In fact the '05 Turbo S has the X50 engine package as standard (450 Hp) and all the extra goodies to go with that. In my personal opinion, the '05 Turbo S is actually a VERY DESIRABLE car. I have been looking at those as well. Interesting one in Michigan on Autotrader. Interesting to me because it is Guards red with a black full leather interior with all red stitching, just like my current '99 996 Carrera Coupe

Zookie, I agree with you about waiting for a nice 997.2 to come around in a couple years. But the original problem still exists. I would then still be forced to spend time with those guys on the 997 Forum, and they are not as nearly friendly or as much fun and easy-going as the folks on the 996 Forum.

Don't base your car buying on a forum!!!

There aren't any rules that say you can't continue visiting here...

Yeah, I know.
My original post was meant with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek, and mostly 'cause I really feel at home with the 996 Forum folks. It just seems that the general undertone on the 997 Forum is very contentious.
Could just be me.

Thundertub, were they that bad to you? They're usually a good bunch of boys. In any case, if you are thinking of getting into a 997 you will not be disappointed at all. I still feel a little bad that I traded my 997S in; however, I still have my 996. If you have any other questions you
can PM.

lol i dint know we were talking about Turbo's... Any Turbo is a Upgrade from a 996 MK1

2005 is a 996 Turbo "S" ONLY. No Regular Turbo's that year, only S's. These came Loaded with PCCB's and X50... 997 Turbo came out in 07

If you dont wanna deal with the 997 Guys, id Suggest a 996 2003-2005 Twin Turbo with or without X50

And If you are willing to spend Turbo Money, id look at a 2002-2005 GT3 First

It's a fine time to buy a car, go for it!
(and continue to hang out with the 996 crowd!)

LOL! Thanks, guys! I haven't been attacked yet over there on the 997 Forum, mostly because I haven't posted anything controversial there. LOL! I have not been insulted or mistreated. But I have been very low profile.

As you know, I sing the praises of the 996 here whenever I can. My biggest holdbacks for a 997 have been price and availability of interesting used cars. Up until the 997.2, the 997 was not a major enough jump in technology for me to spend the money. And except for the engine, my current 996 is cloned out as much as any can get to a 996 GT3. In fact, despite the fact that I have my Carrera badge right where the factory put it, I still get very knowlegable Porsche folks asking me if my car is actually a GT3.

I also have to remind myself that I love this particular 996 (I have had four) so much that I actually bought it TWICE! LOL! Bought it used in 2004 with only 7,500 miles and the original set of tires still on it. Sold it to a nice PCA'er a year later. Bought it back from him one year to the day in 2006 in totally perfect and unused (again) condition. So I either have to stop the train here, or move on and get over it. I drive my car several times a week, it sees regular DE time, it goes to concours events, it has had three trips to the Tail of the Dragon, and at home it sits in the driveway under a cover and not in the garage because it makes it easier to pick that one when leaving the house. LOL! Unlike Phil, I am not saving my car for the next guy. The first owner did that for ME! LOL!
I have driven many 997's and there is absolutely no question that they are a far leap now from my car, particularly the 997.2 . But how can I justify the move when thousands of other Porsche owners have cars they are completely satisfied with and those cars are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 times OLDER than mine?
I would be the first to agree that each generation of 911 Series has been a huge improvement over the previous and that includes the 996 over the 993 (THERE, I said it in front of everyone!). I know this for a fact, because I have owned at least one example of each generation 911/912 However, some folks are just as tickled with their mid-'80's Carrera's, and my son just bought his 3rd or 4th Porsche and this one is a 1989 944. He is as excited as if he had taken delivery in Stuttgart. Since I actually did that with a 911 Carrera Targa in 1989, I need to really get a grip.
Every time I go to the Porsche configuator (about 5 times a day) I end up building a newer version of exactly what I have already.

I think it's human nature to itch for something else.

I had my 944 for over seven years and about three years into the "relationship" I was being swayed by 911s of all shapes and sizes. I told myself my car was more than enough and that held firm for quite some time but then out of nowhere an opportunity came up and here I am.

So I say keep looking and when you find the perfect one you're looking for you'll know and you can make that jump!

FWIW I moved to a 987 and still hang out here at the 996 board!
