This part looks like the stock oil separator, except it is 3x bigger and has 2 chambers that allows oil to be more completely ‘separated’ from the vent tube fumes.
Good luck
Well it is a little late for that as the stock style one will be delivered today. $518 seems a little stiff at the moment anyway. What exactly goes bad on these things?

I dont think you need a motorsport OAS unless you are pulling serious G's at the track.... the internals of the stock AOS has a tendency to fail over time... the diaphragm deteriorates.

Well I do reach the limits of street tires pretty much right away having done DE's and racing for about 17 years. I usually just tone it back a bit to keep my daily driver shiny side up Next event is Road Atlanta 4th of July weekend. Three days!!!

Do like to keep ahead of all maintenance and prefer to replace prior to failure if indicators are smacking me in the face. 996 has never left me stranded yet.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll do this when I get my clutch done next year.

I've always had the puff of smoke after driving it hard. I find that if I let it idle for 5-10 min after a DE session that it doesn't smoke but if I just turn off the car it will always smoke up.
My mechanic said unless it is always smoking even at idle then there isn't a problem.

I looked into this recently, since my car puffs quite a bit at the track. I actually bought the part. However, this is a lot more involved than a bolt-in replacement. After consultation with my indy (who had a lot of experience with cup cars and racing 996's), I decided not to do it since the level of fabrication would be too costly.

Before purchasing this part, I tried to find a 996 owner who actually had done this mod. While several people recommended it, I couldn't find anyone who had actually done it. I did speak with a Cayman S owner who had completed the mod and confirmed that it was quite involved but had the desired effect at the track.

I never got the part either, you do have to modify some things to make it fit properly. I decided to solve the issue by selling the C2 and getting a TT, no more AOS issues to report so far

which side are you going in from (tranny or airbox?)

I did mine from the airbox side... not bad, a friend did his from the tranny side. Seemed easier - if you go from the airbox side order a set of intake gaskets.... you dont want to re-use those in my opinion and the local dealer will hit you up for ~$40 if you walk in the door.... also might want to get one of those hole clamp spring tools from sears, (~$30 IIRC) and that will make putting those damn hoses back on possible (I replaced mine as there was just no way I could get the stock ones back on)

Did not know there were multiple approaches. Was going to review the manual (porsche service CD) to see what they suggested, but are there some decent links that show the two variations?

Have you checked Renntech.org? I think they have a good DIY for this.

Of course it used oil - what do you think the smoke came from?

hoses?.... I think he is talking about the rubber bellows that attaches the aos and crank vent together... they use spring clamps and is a b!tch to put back on w/o the right tool. Sears sells them....

BTW... from what I understand... you cant buy the motorsport AOS from a dealer... you have to talk to a race shop (for Grand Am).
