Default Oil Extractor

Over on the 993 board, there is a thread on using an oil extractor. My brother is using one on his BMW and told me that that is what hte dealers use. In the 993 thread, it says that the MB dealers use it too.

Anyone using one on a 996? It would seem to make collection a whole lot easier. Any reason not to use it?

They seem pretty neat and clean to use, but I don't know if they will effectively extract all the oil from the bottom of the sump, that's where all the heavy stuff settle.

My opinion, changing the oil in the Porsche is so easy, both drain plug and filter are so easily accessible, and since you still have to get under the car to remove the oil filter, why not just remove the drain plug as well? I would also think that oil drains faster thru' the drain plug then it does being sucked out of the extractor.

I mean, unless it saves you the trouble of getting under the car completely, then Yes, I might go for it. I can see the oil extractor being useful for vehicles where the drain plug is hard to access. But normally, the drain plug is not an issue, it's the oil filter that's a pain in some vehicles, like in my F150.

the 996 is not a real Porsche... it does not have a dry sump.

Neither do BMW's and Mercedes which (apparently) use the suckers.

But it does have a built in oil extractor - RMS or the really quick one, IMS

Some early models also extracted oil into the coolent. Perhaps that would be better labeled an oil/coolent exchanger, however.

Bro Red...I said "sump" not "dry sump".
Correct me if I'm wrong, the definition of sump is the bottom of the oil pan where all the oil drains down/settles to.

FYI...for BMW and Mercedes, you can access to the oil filters from the top. So you could use the oil extractor and not have to go under the car.

Yeah this is true, but I dont think most people use them. Maybe dealers do. The problem is exactly as Cosmos posted in that they dont get all the crud up from the bottom

I have a MityVac oil extractor. It DOES NOT WORK with the 996. You can't get all the oil out through the dipstick tube.

But for my other cars it works great.

Thanks. Back to the "damn, I spilled some again" method.

Sorry.... you started it with talk of IMS.... The great news is I pulled into the garage before it 'let loose.'

This is not a very efficient way to change oil....

My 996 has a very slow weep from the RMS or IMS area.

Of course this wasn't an issue when I was driving the 996 at least once a week.
