Default New to 996 world, need advise on motor oil

Finally have parted with an old 930 turbo that was much loved but it was time. Now I find a 1999 996 in the shed with 53,000 on the clock and would appreciate some savvy advise on the oil issue. I have cruised many threads and have seen many lines of thought on this issue and decided a straight out question would be best. I have long been a fan of Mobil 1, but just unclear on the grade. I live in the great white north of Canada so the car will be parked for the seven months of winter but it will see some sprited driving when the roads are clear.
Cheers, J

Your 1999 Owner's Manual specifically outlines the Recommended Oil Weights.

"Use engine oils labeled as API SH or ILSAC GF-1 and viscosity grades of SAE 10W40 or Higher.
For continuous weather conditions and ambient temperatures of mostly below 32F.0C use SAE 5W30 engine oils."

You are NOT required to use the "pay for play' oils on Porsche's approved list.

You can use synthetic or semi synthetic oils.

Stay away from Mobil 0W40. My personal preference is Mobil EXTENDED 15W50 as it has better cleaners than many of the other Mobil oils.

Here we go again.

My dealer puts in Mobil 1 0W-40. I put in Castrol Syntec 5W-40

Agreed. At least he didn't ask if all 996 engines explode.

Don't worry Patrick. The RMS issue will come up in another thread as post #2.

Welcome to the funny farm Moby. Come and visit us in the Canada forum...if you're in TO, there are lots of activities and GTGs planned.
Oh and for the oil: go with one of the multitude of brands and grades that Porsche recommends and you'll be fine. I run Mobil 05W50 as per my tech's suggestions.

If I could FIND 5W-40 Mobil 1, I'd use it. Til then, I just use the Mobil 1 0W-40.

Of coarse all of this only holds true if you car is sill under warranty. After that use want you want. Just don't blame Porsche.
