Default Complete Overhaul for Replacing Stock Stereo

I tried searching in the 996 forum but could not find what I was looking for. It would be great if there was a way to use boolean operators to combine search words.

I have a 2003 996 and want to replace the factory bose stereo with a new deck. What I was told is that I have the type of bose stereo that would require me to replace all of the speakers because of some integration limitations with the bose amplifier.

Is there an adapter I can buy that will do the trick without loss of sound quality or do I just need to bite the bullet and go ahead and replace the bose amp and speakers?

I also have a 2003 996 and have been looking at installing a double din unit.
Apparently there is an adapter that wil work with our system.

If you have the MOST bus you need to replace the amp/speakers.... all the 03+ 996's have them.
My 02 w/Bose did not have this so I was easily able to install a double din Pioneer nav (AVIC-Z) that works fine with the BOSE.

If you do change it all out, what do you plan to do with the Bose components? I have been wanting to upgrade my OEM setup to include door speakers etc. In theory, it should eb an easy upgrage. But as this is Porshe, I am sure that my fantasy of a reasonably priced upgrade will be dashed ont he rocks of reality....

For what it's worth, I just replaced my head unit (CDR-23) on my 03' C4 Cab with a Pioneer AVIC-F90BT and the shop never mentioned anything about replacing the stock Bose amps/speakers. With the exception of adding an 8"subwoofer and aftermarket amp to power the sub, I left everything else alone. Perhaps my 03 did not come with the MOST bus? Nonetheless, I am now happy with the bass response and all the other goodies that came with the new deck ( Navi, DVD, Bluetooth, etc.)

Post it on the forum, in the past I have always heard that if you have MOST you must replace but if you know different there are many folks who will benefit.

Thanks!

Looks good - if you had CDR23 you had MOST.

Sorry in advance.....

That stereo looks awesome, but that speaker in the passenger side taking up all the space, that gets a thumbs down from me. just my opinion, not being rude or impolite....

I'm no stereo guy, but it looks like that amp might be powering more than just the sub.

To the OP, the MOST system/amp has a fiberoptic input, Therein lies the problem. No aftermarket stereo has a fiber output, and there are no "Modules" that will convert RCA to fiberoptic. Some shops will propose to run the Bose speakers from the head unit or a new amp, but the problem is that they are not designed to do this. The Bose speakers are low energy units designed to work with Bose "digital trickery". If you use the speakers without the amp all bets are off as far as sound quality. Plus you may blow the speakers prematurely, and then have to replace them anyway. That is why I HATE the stock system.

No worries, unfortunately there's really not a lot of places to put the sub in a Cab. Objective was not to use any backseat space or trunk space as this was only for "cargo", groceries, luggage for trips out of town, etc. The Mrs. was more than accommodating in giving up a little leg and foot space. The space taken isn't really that bad and not uncomfortable unless you've got olympic power lifting thighs/calves and half the time the seat's empty- so it's minor sacrifice for the low end that is so blatantly missing on the factory sound system.

I can check with the shop, but the amp is a two channel amp bridged to mono straight to the sub.

I guess what we would like to know is what EXACTLY he did, and how you like the sound. If it is powering only the sub then is he powering all the speakers directly from the head unit?
