Where is an info/procedure source for the DIY types. My girl friend has a 99 996 and the cel came on twice and both times she called for a tow. Both times it had an intermittent misfire, rough idle. The shop discovered after removing the battery that mice had been eating the wiring to a "sensor". After wire repairs car tested ok....same mileage in/out. They suggested she drive it and if problem reappears bring it back. First time it rained with car outside, cel and misfire, tow truck back to dealer. "GOT TO LOVE THE TOW TRUCK THING" she understands the value of a Porsche, that cel comes on she pulls over.
Dealer called to report a bad ignition coil.
I am a 951 kinda guy and we have Clark's Garage, I have factory manuals, and between the two I feel I have enough info to perform 75% of the repairs.
Where should I get a code reader for a Porsche 996 ?
Are factory manuals for a 996 worth the paper they are printed on ?
Do u have an online source for info like Clark's Garage ?

Cracked coils are not uncommon.

You can get a cheaper code reader than durametric. Harbor Freight J.C. Whitney $50-$100 will read and erase codes.Very worthwhile to have.Renntech has all the codes listed I keep a copy in the trunk with the reader so I know if I can keep on going or call the tow.

Also, talk with your GF - if the CEL is on steady, you can continue to drive - you only need to stop the car if it's a flashing CEL.

OBDII Meter is a useful tool for codes and resetting CEL - I got mine from Harbor Freight.
