I have a 2002 3.6
I know it may be a backward step -- but I have available for a minimal price near new 3.4 mufflers.
If I do the "sports exhaust mod" by welding in the curved bypass pipe will they perform and sound ok?
Thanks for the advice

The way some of the 3.4 are made (not all) there is a HUGE seam over the cap in the second chamber making the MK1 hack mod the only option. However I have seen some gen 2 3.4's w/o that seam and think if you can do the MKII hack they "should" sound very much the same.
I believe if you have to do the MKI hack its not worth the effort

Michael.
I have done the MK II mod to both 3.4L and 3.6L mufflers and installed them on my '04 996. I would strongly recommend that you NOT waste your time doing the mod to the 3.4L mufflers.
While my 3.4L mod was better that stock, I was disappointed in the sound difference. However, the 3.6L mufflers with the same mod sounded awesome!
Why not do the mod to your current mufflers? The only reason I did not do the mod to my stock 3.6L mufflers was because I was leasing the car at the time and wanted to be able to return the car to stock equipment at lease end.
Just to make sure you understand the difference between the MK I mod and the MK II mod, I have a pic of each mod. the 1st pic shows the MK I mod, which is a smaller diameter 'J" pipe connecting the inlet pipe to the outlet pipe. The 2nd pic shows the MK II mod which connects a 2" to 2.5" diameter pipe from the caped end of the muffler to the outlet pipe. This mod mimics the design of the 3.6L "real" PSE mufflers, but obviously, does not include the vacuum controlled open/closed valve (shown in the 3rd pic).
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Tim, in your pics the top is MKI on 3.4's the second is MKII on 3.6 and the bottom is just awesome (but not a hack, so throw those out.... to me!)
but did you do the MKII hack to a set of 3.4's? and did they have that large seam where the two halves were put together?

Ed,
In my second pic in post #3, the muffler on the left is one of the 3.4L cans with the MK II mod. The muffler on the right is my stock 3.6L from my '04 996.
BTW, the mufflers in the first pic are, I believe, 3.6L mufflers with the MK I mod. THE 3.6L mufflers had the accordion inlet pipe on them.
