Default 997 mufflers, exhaust, cans: on a 996

Rennlisters:

After searching and searching the forums, and even calling an exhaust manufacturer - no one was able to tell me the EXACT difference between a 997 and 996 exhaust, and whether or not a 997 would fit on a 996. Well after getting a 997 Tubi to fit to my C4S, I figured I'd post what I learned so that someone searching for this question would at least have more information...

Mounting bracket: the same

Tube from cat to muffler: about 2.25 inches too long. (see pic, sample exhaust from Vivid's website). Also note that this tube is NOT flared or tapered. Meaning: you can just cut end and you're good to go.

Tube from muffler to tips: If you have a C4S, the 997 exhaust tubing will be perfect (no mod needed, see pic) - leaving you a 2-2.25 tube in the center of your exhaust cutout. If you have a 997 exhaust that looks like the picture I attached above, the tips will probably swap from a C2 996.

I'd like to thank member Juankimalo for giving me the hope that this mod was possible after he mounted a 997 PSE to his 996. Well, I hope this helps anyone contemplating this mod... cheers. B)

Good post! I knew (had heard) that some modifications needed to be made to 997.1 ** mufflers to get them to work on a 996, but I wasn't sure exactly what needed to be changed.

** the 997.2 exhaust system in TOTALLY different from the 997.1 system, but the side mufflers themselves "may" be the same or very similar to the 997.1 mufflers.

The best thing about putting on 997 PSE vs 996 PSE is the price.... but the 996 PSE electronics is better than the 997... better control for on/off sport function.

Good point -- my post really relates to 997.1 spec mufflers... have no idea about the newer ones...

Could I steal your post for a second? I pulled my mufflers off my '03 C4S yesterday to do the Fister mod MKII--(Has anyone done BOTH the MkI & MkII on the same muffler? I know about the back pressure stuff and all...but has anyone actually done it?) I couldn't believe how heavy the mufflers are...it's like a bag of cement!! Times 2. So, anyone figure out how to fabricate some, say, Glasspaks (do they still make those) to bolt on? Just askin"

I am not aware of anyone that did the MK I and MK II PSE mod to the same set of mufflers. You could be the first guy to do it!

Check out "Afterhours" exhaust in (I believe) SoCa. They use a dual glas-pak style exhaust but I've heard it's really loud???

To me, that's at least half the benefit of an exhaust upgrade -- the weight savings!
Plus what's the going price for 997 cans?

I weighed one of my stock cans...20 lbs each.
The Fabspeed was somewhere around 7-8lbs each (just a bathroom scale, but you get the idea).

Total weight savings, about 24lbs off the rear.

I've also heard about the "Afterhours" exhaust which would also provide the weight savings, but I think they're only slightly quieter than bypass pipes.... http://www.afterhoursautomotive.com/...emufflers.html

From what I've seen they're wicked loud under full throttle but have a much more sedate tone than the bypass at idle or when cruising.
