Unhappy clutch noise

Hi,

My 996 has now 47000 miles, and began making a scratch noise when I push & release the clutch, it doesn't have any problem related to shifting, same easy shifting like before, just the noise. Please advice.

It is probably the clutch power spring also known as the "helper spring" which can be greased to eliminate the noise. See the diagram below.

gota911, I will check if that is the problem. The noise is strong and I hear It like it comes from below the car. I will try your suggestion, thanks!

Hi gota911,

I tried my car doing a strong sprint from Zero, and no problem at all, it shifted to all gears up & down. While driving slow I hear a dragging noise from the clutch pedal, every time when I push it and release it, when I arrived to my home, I ask a frien to push the clutch and only when the pedal was in, I heard a noise from the clutch in the engine compartment.

I had a squeak, which was really noticable if I had been sitting in traffic the car got warm. It was the clutch master cylinder, which was replaced.

Maniac, it is really hard to diagnose "noises" over the internet, but I usually try to offer the least expensive option first.

jyoteen may have a good solution if the noise is coming from the engine area. You should have the dealer or an indy check it out to get confirmation about the master cylinder. Let us know how you make out.

gotta 911, I think you where right about that the main source of noise was the Clutch power spring or helper spring that needs to be greased (located behind the clutch pedal), but yes the clutch is beginning to make some vibration, does not give any problem while shifting. Do you think that since is not grabbing or slipping, I will be able to run on my next DE, and just wait for the clutch to wear more for me to change it?
Do you recommend any stage 2 or 3 clutch with or without HP Pressure plate for daily driving and occasional DE track driving?

I have a similar squeak, but not too bad. No noticeable change in clutch. Was told it was the pressure plate, right after the tranny was out last May. Not covered. 18k miles, I'm living with the noise and can barely notice it.

With more miles, you might want to have this checked thoroughly after trying some of the easier steps above.

To test how well the clutch is slipping (or not), drive about 30 MPH and shift into 4th gear and accellerate. If the engine revs move up a lot but the car doesn't accellerate much, then the clutch is slipping. However, if the car accellerates at a pace that is consistant with the engine revs, then the clutch is still in pretty good shape. If the clutch is still brabbing, then yo can probably run your DE.

WHen it comes time to replace the clutch, I would stay with a stock clutch if the car will be primarily a daily drivier with an occasional DE event. However, that is just my preference. Others may have a differing opinion about installing an upgraded clutch.

Thumbs up

Hi gota911,
I already test it that way that you suggested without any problem. By the way gota911, which is the grease that goes in the clutch power spring (helper spring)?
