Did a few things today (pics)...
Nice warm day so....
I changed my oil.... after 4k miles. So, I decided to cut up the oil filter and it had several metal fillings.... didnt look that big of a deal, what do you think? BTW thats a .25c.
Tried out my new ipod ($35) cassette integration.... for those who want to keep their 99-01 nav.... here is an alternative. Sounds way better than an FM xmitter.
with the supplied power....
Decided to clean out the front radiator.... one season worth of crap.
While the bumper was out... decided to reroute the aux hood release to the bottom of the bumper...

Red,
How the hell did that Quarter get inside your oil filter. You need to start using a different oil filter.
Nice job on the iPond thingy and cleaning the radiator.
As for me, I didn't do jack today!

It hard to comment on the metal shavings. There was no history of documented metal fillings (not every oil filter was opened for examination.) I guess you can open every filter going forward and see if you continue to see them.
Didn't the oil filter do its job by trapping the metal shavings in the filter?

Chao... the filter did exactly what its doing, filter any crap that might be circulated through the engine... Ive read a magazine that did a long term review on the 996 and their particular car was actually faster at 45K miles than it was a 5K... apparently the tolerance on these engines are very tight and over time will loosen up a bit (hence some metal shavings, wear and tear) and the performance will actually increase... nice!
I knew I was gonna open a can of worms when I cut the oil filter.... a few weeks back I read someone on Renntech did the same thing... and to a point Loren stated that metal shavings are
somewhat normal in oil filters... and I agree... Im really not worried, its not like everyone cut their filters on every oil change and check it out. But, I think its a good thing to do, just to see if it gets worse or not... it really isnt that much shavings but who really knows what is allowed. For the next oil change, I will take oil sample. Right now, the oil is contaminated with some older oil, so that will make the test invalid.
What is the ideal way of sending a sample... oil filter with a cup of used oil?
