They said that since it was already on there, that the damage was probably done and that there was no point in putting the stock air box back on until the MAF gave up the ghost. I did make sure to get the stock intake parts from the PO as part of the sale. I hear the MAF is a DIY job, so I was contemplating doing it when it goes.

I had some reservations about the mod, but the PO seemed to think that the EVO version was better than the K&N as far as MAF issues go. Still, I see plently of folks on 6speed buying them (and many uninstalling immediately after).

You think I can avoid the MAF replacement by swapping the stock stuff back in after 2k miles with the EVO?

I have yet to understand why anyone would put an oiled air filter in a Porsche in spite of the numerous comments about the oil killing MAF sensor. Makes no sense to me to risk that damage to get some additional intake sound and a handful (if any) HP gain.

+1
if you want a stock airbox, just ask and someone will trade you plus maybe some $ your way... (not me... been down that road)

Yes, and the MAF can be cleaned with spray solvent if it isn't too far gone. He has the stock airbox from the PO.

Interesting. Any details on the spray? I may consider doing this soon then.

There is actually a MAF cleaner spray by CRC, you can get at most auto parts stores.

Could I get a second set of eye on this: http://www.evoms.com/marketplace/Vie...-D00B3D65FC7C}

How can you tell if it is an oil filter? Seems like the only indication is that they offer some K&N cleaning products...

What about these filters? http://www.aempower.com/ViewCategory.aspx?CategoryID=93

Appologies to the OP - I'll bugger off onto my own thread on this if need be.

not a problem, but a new thread might make it more searchable by someone else in the future.

I have an Evo intake. I love the sound and would never go back to the stock airbox.

I have not lost a MAF, but when the filter does need changing (which incidentally will not be for around 40K miles), then I'll switch to one of the dryflow filters.

Thanks! I've decided to stick with it for now. I couldn't find any posts here or on renntech where people had problems with the EVO CAI and MAF.

yep. got the car back. just bad spark plugs. i got one of the bad ones from cylinder #1. contact point was square and concave from wear. to anyone else considering holding off on spark plug replacement: don't. it'll save yourself some premature gray hairs.

anyway, car checked out fine. pulls strong. funny thing is is that it pulled strong right up until plug failure. it's like switch got cut.

anyway, whole bill was about $200 including 6 new plugs.

Thanks for posting. I'll make sure my dealer checks my plugs at the next service in the beginning of the spring.

+1 I've had an EVO in both the 986 and 996 for years now. Never had a problem with either car.
