Morning everyone. Upon opening my oil filler cap, this is what I find. Car is 00 C4 with 93K. Car is DD and runs fine. First noticed a little about three months ago after a 700 miles trip. Wasn't that bad, but now it's gotten worse. Am I looking at serious engine work, or new engine. Any ideas? thanks

I had the same issue. Was causing anxiety UNTIL...
I searched 6speed and found several posts that explained it. (Searched for yellow oil or something like that.)

Answer (summarized from others that seemed wise): it is to do with cool outside temperatures, versus warm oil, the dew point and water condensation -- causing it to deposit in the end of filler tube and oil cap. Probably from short trips in cool or winter weather.
Everyone says don't worry -- just go for a long hard drive.
I didn't really read why it causes the color of yellow creamy sludge slime goo -- seems logical that its the color of oil & water congealed. (It reminds me of some food when it cools: the coagulated oil takes on that particular cloudy look.)
The "forum experts"
said to worry only if your oil on the dipstick is not clear -- if this is milky or cloudy then you have coolant and oil mixing -- but that is a different issue -- and one to worry about.

Bottom line: There is nothing to fear, except fear itself.

After letting the car warm up and taking off the oil filler cap, the car idled higher, from 900 rpms to 1000 rpms, and also I heard what appeared to be a air sucking noise, as best as I can describe it. I also checked the oil's color with the dip stick, and it appeared normal. If in fact it is the aos, how difficult a job is it to do?

I fail to mentioned that I use this car to drive back and forth to work everyday. The trip is only 15 miles each way. Is 15 miles considered "short trip" in your opinion? Other than that, I drive this car constantly. Bought it in 07 with 58K, and now have about 95K.

Condensation is normal on ALL internal combustion engines... driving them till they are hot enough to evaporate the water out is the way to over come the water staying in the motor. Changing oil more frequently on cars that see "short trips" will also remove the water. 15 miles/ea way IMO is NOT a short trip.. that should be plenty of time to warm up and dry out.
The AOS is a biach to change...I have read that a C4 is differant than a C2 for this (you can search around) but I have heard $400-$600 for an indy shop is about the low end of having someone do it for you. The part is about $110-$170 depending on your source.
Since the car did not stumble and die when you removed the cap, i am thinking this is NOT your problem, but it would not hurt to get some other people to chime in here..

To borrow from Tim, when my car HAD this... you car has VD, been hanging out with BMW's?
I am told this is normal as others have stated, however, I have noticed since switching from Mobil 1 to Motul oils the goo (VD) does not show at ALL.
Just an observation.

Mobil 0W40 contributes greaty is engine sludge on cars driven for short runs (Less than 30 - 45 minutes). If there is sludge in the filler tube, chances are there is sludge in other high spots of the oiling system. Changing to a better oil will help eliminate the problem.

Well i saw this thread yesterday and figured i should cheak mine too... I dont drive the car much in the winters but i do drive it... Today weather was good, so i went for a sprited drive in the rain/fog for about an hour... Got back and poped the Oil cap and i have the same Yellow Sludge, not as much as the picture above... What is a AOS? my car is still under warranty and its going in for Inspection next Thursday... What can i do?
PS: I change my oil every 5000KM...

I ran my car today for about 2 hours...WOOWWW do I love this little car...
Anyhow I changed my AOS about 2 weeks ago, had some of that sludge, but today it was all normal oil color when I opened it up after my drive.
I am no expert on this part or what is does, there are many threads here and on Renntech... after reading quite a bit of those I believed mine was bad so I replaced it.
Since yours is warranty, just show them the oil fill tube and tell them you want this fixed.....
