Default Putting in new clutch

Hi,

since I have to change my transmission I decided that I will also put in a new clutch. Any tips on how to make it as eaxy as possible, I have the old transmission already out and will start putting it back togehter this weekend. I will also change the RMS and the AOS. In the Porsche manual they state that you need the centric mandel which I don't have. What's the best and smoothest way to put in the new clutch and get the transmission in?

to work the tranny lift as you're under car guiding/shoving tranny into place and getting some bolts started.

Avoid touching flywheel and friction surfaces at all with hands. Be sure flywheel clean. Use brake cleaner and wipe down with clean dry lint free towel.

Also, having some way of aligning clutch disc before tightening down clutch pressure plate housing to flywheel so transmission input shaft can slide in freely is mandatory. (Be sure too if it has one to renew the pilot bearing and use high temp heavy grease to lube bearing and end of input shaft, but just a dab. New bearing might come pregreased which all you have to do is make sure you don't get any dirt in grease and input shaft clean and free of dirt/old grease.)

Use very heavy high temperature grease, but just a dab, to lube all pivot points of the clutch mechanism. A bit of this grease can be used to lube the input splines to help mating splines of clutch disc move freely away from flywheel.

I don't have it handy but check Bentley manual or factory manual to see if this lubing recommended or prohibited. Generally though it is recommended. But never more than just a dab and it must be high temperature grease so it doesn't melt and run away from where it wants to stay put.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Macster's comments above are pretty complete. For the grease I used Castrol Optimol TA paste. Good but expensive stuff. Lasts forever though.

To allign the disk and pressure plate you will need somethign liek this: http://www.clutchtools.com/index.php?productID=40066

Be prepared for a frustrating job to get the tranny lined up with the engine again. I remember with the engine in, the top bolt is also a big PITA.

Good luck, Joost

I just changed fluid in mine,.... Chris's German has the good stuff in bulk, I can lend you my jug and pump if you need one.

I will be working on my wife's car this WE as she has a leak somewhere, but if you get stuck and need a hand, give me a shout......I will try and make it over for the hard part at least...

when is the alignment tool arriving? That HAS to be done first! - I might have one, there are many to choose from but maybe I have the right one, never checked it....

did you do the AOS already?

RMS done ??

Hi Ed,

I was sick last weekend so nothing done at the car. the only thing I did was changing the shifter cables since they are different form the one I had. I ordered the clutch on ebay and it should arrive hopefully tomorrow. Then the next step is the AOS, afterwards I will pull the old clutch, then the RMS and then putting all back together. I don't think I will be able to finsih it this weekend but I will let you know the progress and when I'm reday for putting the transmission in I will definetly give you a call.

BTW, have you seen the 996 Cabrio listed on craigslist for $ 19,000?
