Drivers side door compartment issue
Hi guys been a while since I last posted. Things are well here. I need some help and figured this is the place to get it. On the drivers side door compartment the pin that faces the front of the car came off and the compartment door will not stay on. I have spend hours trying to get the pin back in to hold the arm rest/compartment door. The pin keeps hitting the top of the hole. Anyone have any advice or recommendations on what to do? Thanks in advance.

I don't know if this will help, but here is a diagram from the PET. I am assuming you mean #38 in the diagram below. Here are the part numbers for that assembly. Let us know how you make out.
#37 996-555-441-00 Right (not shown in diagram)
#37 996-555-442-00 Left
#38 999-094-4018-00 Bolt
#39 999-073-081-02 Tapping screw 4, 2 X 13

gota911 - thank you for the diagram. #38 is the pin that is fighting me to get back into the door. I will try again to see if I can get it back in. It just keeps hitting the top. For those who do not want to go through this make sure your pin is push in as it can come loose every time you open the compartment.

Did you figure out how to fix this? I have the same problem, and am struggling with it.
There is a semi circle metal collar on the door mount (where the pin slides in). On the drivers side the collar is facing up, and shat is holding the armrest up not allowing the pin to slide in. On the passanger side it is down.
I'll try to post pics later... didn't realise I cant do it from my computer...

The door is spring-loaded, so you need to apply a little force to get the holes aligned properly before the pin will go through them all. As I recall from my '03 Boxster, there should be a little circlip on each end to prevent the pin from coming out unexpectedly - but that clip is missing on my 996 driver side as well, so maybe it was introduced later.

I'm having the same problem as described above. Seems like no matter what I do, the pin can't go in 'cleanly'--it hits the top of the shaft that it's supposed to slide through.
Also, my '99 doesn't seem to have the springs on either door. I've always thought they worked perfectly normally, so maybe they added that feature later?

Nevermind, SOLVED! The shaft needs to be gently rotated to the open position with a pair of pliers. The pin will then line up and slide in with minimal effort. (The shaft is obviously in the closed position when the pin falls out.) Takes about 3 seconds when you know how. And to think it only took six years to get to the answer

A droplet of your favorite cyanoacrylate adhesive at one end of the pin will keep the pin in place without interfering with the hinge. If you use too much adhesive, capillary action will cause it to be drawn along the shaft too far and will glue the lid open - so don't be all squirty with your glue.

Thanks for this post, I struggled with mine until I found this threat - for clarity, the part you need to rotate is the metal half-circle part in the door towards the front of the car. I rotated mine counter clockwise with a pair of needle nose pliers and the shaft slid right in.
