Always left to right. Never try to start on the right side.

+1 By hand, but not quite the old fashioned way... instead of dishwashing liquid soap I use liquid soap made specifically for washing cars... microfiber wash mitts and towels... two segregated sets, one set for the wheels, one set for the rest of the car... then finish with a mist wax...

The truck on the other hand is a frequent visitor to the touchless car wash...

Hand wash only.
Plus many times (especially here in So Cal were it seldom rains) you only need a dusting followed by a quick detailer spray.

When my car was stock, there were no issues. I used them a dozen times. Just be careful if you are particular about your wheels, as they might get dinged up.

After I upgraded to my Ruf deck lid and wing, the last auto-wash I went through sent a deluge of water into my engine bay and the engine cut out. It took about 5 minutes of restarting to get it going again. And that was after they pushed the Porsche out of the car wash area.

Now, my car is too low to go through at all

I go to the coin-op carwash, especially if there is are water restrictions in the spring / summer.

Yup. Auto in the winter, handwash in the summer. Nothing like a good auto undercarriage rinse.

use a coin op wash if you're not washing by hand. i've had damaged tires due to automatic car washes where your car gets pushed on a track.

+1 for this set up exactly

and washing only takes a couple minutes... always dry the car, this takes longer but keeps water spots down. Then open it all up and dry jams and everything you can see... leave it open and let it air out for a while too....

There's a very good detaling section here on the board with some of the top pros in the industry. If you can't find an answer there then look to Autopia.
