Last week went for my Sunday drive. While I always observe all speed laws I do have a Valentine V1; in the unlikely event that I slip above the posted speed limit. I have opted not to hard wire the unit into my car, and as such was fighting with the suction cup mounts for the bulk of my drive. When the cups were new they held great, but they seemed to loose some of their holding ability.
I have seen several mirror mounting brackets available, but they do not seem to be adaptable to the short mirror column of a 2002 996.
Any suggestions.

One easy suggestion for you. . .
Do you have a Michael's craft store near you? They have some very nice, clear, suction cups that can replace the V1 cups. Much stronger and longer life in my experience. Especially in cold weather. (Picked this tip up over at radardetector.net)

Once you disturb the cups their performance is significantly weakened. What I recommend is to leave the suction cup mount on the car and use some other mounting method for your other cars. I hardwired mine but use it in other cars routinely.
How I did my hardwire -- may differ for 996s....

Note that if you mount high by the rear view mirror, the ability for your unit to detect a laser speed trap is drastically reduced.
You need to mount low to have any real chance of detecting a laser hitting the high reflection areas at the front of the car.

I use my Valentine in other locations in my other cars. You compromise radar detection when mounting for laser threats. You have to mount it based upon the threat for your area.

Hence you should mount for LASER, and RADAR will not be impacted.

The owners manual states as high as possible, and not blocking the view of the detector front or rear. I've been using it to the left of the rear view mirror, in my line of sight and muted in my 911 and the M3. Both cars are hard wired, and I use the suction cups. Mine are a little over a year old now, but work without any issue.

The V1 manual is misleading - see here:
