Simple, and most likely dumb, question
Why does the badge on some 996's say '911' and others say 'Carrera'. Aren't they the same thing? Is it an aftermarket change or what?

The 40th edition says 911, but anyone can remove the Carrera badge and replace it with the 911 badge. I think they are one and the same, and to me they are both acceptable to display on the rear end of a 996.

911 is the model or type of Porsche.
Carrera, Targa, Turbo, GT3, GT2 are different versions of the 911, like variations on a theme.
Then the 2 or 4 wheel drive and/or the base versus the "S" models offer additional derivatives of some of the versions.

I understand all of that. But I was asking in regards to the actual, physical badge on the back of (what I assume to be) carrera 2's (not c2s, plural of c2). On occasion it says '911' instead of 'carrera'

To be technical, the Millenium and the 40th Ann are the only 996 that came in 911 badges from the factory. The others 911 badges are all mods...
