Default Steering Wheel Adjustment issue,99 996

My locking lever, when pushed down, will not disengage so I can adjust the steering wheel. When I attempt to push down the lever it moves 3/4s of the way and stops and the lever starts to bend. I am afraid to push to hard and break the lever. Anyone have this issue before? Any solutions?

Mine doesn't need to move all the way to unlock the wheel.

You realize there's no tilt adjustment right?...Telescope was the only adjustment.

Yea I do know there is no tilt. I am a tall guy and have the seat all the way back etc. I meant to say in my post the lever moves 3/4 inches and stops. I can't get any telscope movement at all.

Funny that I've never even tried the telescope adjustment, always felt right.

I'll check mine and let you know.....

btw, good for you for being a member already.

Ok, so my lever travels about 90* from horizontal down to vertical.

At about the 45* position, there's a little resistance as it disengages, but mine moves relatively smoothly.

It seems like you can reach further in, deep on the lever, so you're not pushing on the end, would be much less likely to break the plastic lever....

I'd imagine yours is just tight, maybe rarely adjusted before?

Coincidence, I tried to adjust my steering wheel today and indeed found out that there was no tilt on the 996, just telescopic adjustment which is enough for me. I thought I could play with both tilt and telescope to adjust my driving position, oh well...

I tried reaching further in on the lever.. same result. I was wondering if I could spray a lubricant with out messing stuff up in the steering column. Any recomendations out there?

Here are a couple pictures of when I rebuilt my car. One is from the donor car at the junk yard. The steering column is pretty stout on our cars. A little penetrating oil will not hurt it at all. If you find that yours is broken, I have a spare sitting in my garage.

Thanks for the pictures. It is hard to see but it looks like I would spray the penetrating oil where the plastic lever enters the housing.

Is there no tilt adjustment for performance reasons? I would like the wheel a little lower myself!

PS--I adjusted my wheel all the way out when I got the car, and haven't touched the adjuster since.
