did search - oil - 0W40 but FAQ section says mix 5W30 and 15W-50
I know most seem to use 0W40. I am on east coast (northern va) - and was wondering whether the mixture is recommended?
0W40 - seems to be better suited for high temperature/humidity areas (perhaps TX/FL, etc).
Just curious to see why FAQ would suggest something a bit contrary?
Thx

Porsche DOES NOT recommend a specific weight of oil. The oil delivered in the car from the factory is provided by Exxon for 2 reasons. First, the 0W40 is necessary to meet the MPG claims made by Porsche. Second, Exxon supplies the oil to Porsche at a deep discount, knowing that most drivers are ignorant when it comes to oil and its function within the engine and they will use what the car comes with.
Which oil you use is a compromise. There is no lubricant that will deliver both the best fuel efficiency and the best protection. You want the best gas mileage...use the Mobil 0W40. You want the best protection in any climate above 25F...use a 5W50 or preferably Mobil Extended Perfromance 15W50.
Not only will moving to a better oil than Mobil 0W40 reduce or eliminate oil burning and leaks in cars prone to it, but will better insure that your valves and variocams operate predictably and smoothly while providing substantially better pressure at high load and low engine speeds.

Thanks anderson. Interesting, Castrol looks like 5W40 is what they recommend for the most part; but, with Mobil 1 - 0W40 is okay; but, majority of it says 5W40 as well.
I am not interested in gas mileage - honestly, I am more interested in protection and protecting the engine internals properly. I just am wondering if I switch from 0W40 to a different viscosity - is this wise? I do not mind sticking with 0W40; but, I've been reading that a 50 might be good. Appears from the PDF you can mix same oils without problems -- so, maybe combining a 5W40 with 5W50 if Exxon Brand. Appears only 5W40 allowed for Castrol.
Does it make a difference if it is a 3.4L vs. 3.6L? Probably not from the PDF file that was posted here.
Side note- does anyone use redline fuel injector or BG products as well with oil change/fuel every 3K or so?

There is not a specific brand or weight of oil recommended or approved by Porsche, but a wide range of both. i.e. nowhere does Porche state that you must use Mobil 0W40 regardless of what conditions you drive your car in.
Additionally, The Porsche approval list is for dealers only and is not distributed in any way to the owners of the car. The type and weight oil listed in your manual is all you have to follow to be in complete compliance with Porsche.

If you ask me for a restaurant recommendation and I recommend two, is it still a recommendation?
When faced with the road less travelled do you... well, let's stop at semantics.

Semantically: a range of recommendations is still a recommendation, and you said they made no recommendation...
