Last winter, the battery died - swapped it out, but one of the annoying things that came of it is I noticed some time after that if I filled the tank full, the gauge would only show 3/4 a tank.
I suspect this is related, but... thus the post here. 1) Is there an easy way fill the tank and calibrate the fuel gauge to 'full'? 2) This have anything to do with the battery, or was it just goofy timing and no connection?
· Calibration is necessary only after replacement of the fuel tank, fuel level sensor or instrument cluster.
The fuel level sensor system need not be calibrated if the battery was disconnected or a plug
connection on the instrument cluster or fuel level sensor was removed. The values remain stored in
the instrument cluster.
Im not sure if this helps...for about 3 months my gauge would only read 3/4 tank when it was full. The only thing that occurred in the same time period was the famous ignition switch failure. Connected? I can't say. However, the fuel gauge did reset itself recently and now actually shows "full." FWIW
My gas guage never showed full past 3/4 tank the whole time I owned it. I did a search and found it's a common problem. I never fixed it, just got used to it.
This thread isn't TOO old, is it? I'm active on the Corvette Forum, and wanted to share some experience with fuel gauge issues that might be relevant since all fuel gauges are similar in some ways. The problem C5 owners were having was that the fuel gauge would get stuck somewhere on the range of E to F. The cause was sometimes attributed to evil fuel additives (or the lack thereof), and the solution was a bottle of Techron at next fill up. When the problem occurred to my 2003 Corvette (similar age as the 996), I tried it and it worked. The stuff's not expensive, so it might be worth a try. BTW, this thread came up when I searched the problem, so I thought it might be worth a post, even though the OP has probably solved their problem by now.
