Guardian Angel paid a visit today
I drove Big Red to work to day, as I often do. Parked in my usual spot next to co-worker Melanie, who drives a 2001 Boxster S, 6-speed, Forest Green Metallic. However, today, Melanie had driven a 2008 Guards Red Cayman S with the tag BRUPOR0, which means her car was in for service at Brumos Porsche and she was driving a nice loaner. I have had a similar loaner before, from Brumos - a 2008 Cayman dressed in Cobalt Blue.
But hers was Guards Red - like my 996. Parked next to each other. No saleman.
I have thought for a couple years about moving "up"(?) to a Cayman S, but the numbers never made sense to me to change, i.e. spend $70k for what major advantage? All the numbers tell me to remain where I am, but my cheating heart says it's time to move on. When I had a chance to drive a loaner Cayman a couple different times, I felt that the car was sluggish and heavy feeling. The Tiptronic was unsatisfactory to my driving style, and the Cayman that had the 5-speed stick got bumped into reverse once or twice at I shifted into the non-existant 6th gear. I also felt claustrophobic with the smaller greenhouse and "wall" behind the seats. But I liked it much better than the Boxster loaners I have had, or the Cayenne loaners, over the years.
I stood in the parking lot and looked at both cars... line for line, number for number, next to each other... two hot redheads, one ten years older than the other but still way hot... and.. then...
I walked into the office, opened my attache' case, pulled out the files I had downloaded from CaymanClub.net a few weeks ago with the 2009/10 dealer order forms...
... and threw them in the trash.
My 996 may grenade it's engine someday, but it will still be a Carrera. And the new engine will cost a fraction of the cost of a new Cayman S.

Aw, c'mon guys. Both are Porsches. Both are great cars, just great in different ways. I have both the Boxster and the 911. Would I sell the 911 to get a Boxster/Cayman? No way. Would I sell the Boxster and replace with another 911? No way. Both great cars in their own right.

I guess, my point was too subtle.
My Guardian Angel gave me the opportunty to clearly compare both cars side-by-side.
Palting said it correctly - both are great cars, but to trade one for the other for would be a mistake.
And I do love the openess of the 996 (and those back seats - thanks AndyK).
