Default Repairing 99 3.4L Engine - Timing Chain/Camshafts

My 99 996C2 with 71k miles recently had the timing chain break which caused the teeth on the camshaft to fail as well. I was surprised the dealer recommended fixing the engine instead of replacing it given what I have read on the forum. They have verified there was no valve-piston contact that occurred.

The estimate is $7.5k to do the repair which is signficantly less than replacing the engine. Car is well maintained and ran great until the failure (which occured right when I started it up in the morning). The car has been trouble free the last few years so $7.5k isn't too high a cost given its the only signficant repair in the last 4 years.

Has anyone else had the dealer make this repair instead of replacing the engine? Reading the article in excellence on the top 3 failures (IMS, d-chunk, and connecting rods) I am a little concerend about not replacing the engine given the mileage.

Check out this post https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...le-on-m96.html and consider contacting Jake Raby here for advice on your specific situation. I personally wouldn't spend that much money without getting a rebuilt engine. There is an engine rebuilder (on ebay...check with Mother) that is currently offering rebuilt 996 3.4 engines for about $6,500. Good luck.

JJ and I talked for a little while today.. I had to run and didn't get a chance to call him back..

JJ, call me at 706 892 8192 as late as 2200 EST tonight as I'll be working late on a 996 test engine :-)

If it was me I would spend a little more and get a new/rebuilt engine. You could spend all that dough and 6 months from now have another problem occur. I'd start with a clean slate at this point!

And get it bored to 3.8L and do some porting/polishing at the same time.

Thats my specialty....

I had FIVE calls from owners of failed 996 engines today... Two cylinder failures, an IMS failure, a connecting rod failure and then jj's timing chain failure. Of thos everyone chose our Performance 3.6 engine as what they'll buy if they decide to repair the car.

You'd never know the economy sucks by looking at our schedule... Thanks to Porsche and our ability to provide answers to the problems better than anyone else!
