3.6 L x51?
I have attempted to get information regarding an x51 3.6 engine and I am not having any luck. my 996 is getting the engine replaced and Porsche sent out this engine by error. The dealer insists that its an x51. I am very sure that it's not since the x51 is a 997 I Gen option only on the 3.8L at a 17K additional cost.

The dealer insists that this motor puts out 381 hp. I find this somewhat difficult to believe. They are also talking about adding an extra radiator and a stronger clutch.

If that is the case (381 HP) then it is a 997 Carrera S 3.8L engine with the Carrera Power kit (X-51) added. I am sure that will also involve some changes upgrades to OBC software.
It is hard to believe, but if they can fit it, then "more power to you" (pun intended).

Russo, I believe the easiest way to visibly identify the X51 3.6 engine is by the aluminum intake manifold. The manifold on the non-X51 engine is black plastic (composite?). Attached is a picture of a X51 3.6 engine being stuffed into a boxter.

Mfletch, thank you. It is definately a 3.6 with 345 hp. The dealer doesn't know what they are talking about. They feel its the 381 hp witch I know is the x51 of the 997S. In addition, the crate that this engine came out of is identified as a 3.6. The funny thing is that Porsche is not very helpful in enlightening the people at the dealership; hence, I am having to do the leg work for them.

What kind of deal are they going to make you on the X51? That is a sweet engine.

Definitely not a GT3 engine. There is some controversy since Porsche has offered to pay 75/25 to replace my original 2002 45k engine due to casting defect in which the engine at the RMS is not able to completely seal. My respect to Porsche since the car is way out of warranty. I am trying to get this engine put in but its dragging the process down. I have been without my 996 for about 4 months. The good thing is that I have my 997s and thus no withdrawal symptoms from driving a P. In any case, I thought that if indeed the engine was the more powerful I can justify the additional expense; however, since its only 20 hp more I am going to settle for the original 996 plastic covered intake.

JimB, I can see your point, LOL. It's not a 997S X51. It's an x51 for the 996. Surely, the dealer and the factory should improve their communication and thus assure a more professional and competent interaction with their customers.

Just received news today, they are going to install the X-51 for the price difference. It has been recommended to put in a heavier duty clutch. Any advice? I personally don't think that an extra 25 hp requires it but in any case the clutch is already apart and thus the only cost is for the actual hardware. Another question regards re-mapping the chip.
