Default Anyone living in Tokyo? Maintenance assistance required

Hi all,

I live in Tokyo and for the past few years I've been getting Porsche to service my car. Although they do a good job they are pretty pricey.

Right now I'm in dire need of a car battery (I've just moved back from Hong Kong). I know my car battery of 2.5 yrs old was a little flat and Porsche told me that it's reached it's life and I'd need to change it. The cost of a Porsche car battery is approx Y38,000 (USD$380 approx). I've read in the forums that ppl in the States can use 3rd party car batteries at under USD$100. So I called up Autobacs in Japan they quoted me Y42,000 for a Borsch car battery.

I'm sure there are other members in this forum who live in Japan who may know where to go to, to get reasonably priced parts for the Porsche. Can you please make me some recommendations? This is somewhat urgent.

Thank you,
Sean

They don't have Sears or Autozone in Japan?
Is that what Autobacs is? Well, you also don't need a Bosch battery, just similar rating to your current battery.

With all the electronics in Japan, would've thought batteries would be cheaper there, ha.

You know, there's a guy here with a Honda that might trade you straight up.

You should be able to substitute a lightweight battery made in Japan. I think Buddy Club was the name of one of the brands. My advice is to visit a race shop that works on Porsches, and ask them to recommend a compatible lightweight battery made in Japan. You may need to use a brace to ensure the best fit, but you'll save a lot of money doing it this way and you will drop a little weight as well. Make sure the electrical specifications are comparable to your existing battery.

Update: I think Optima, Odyssey or Braille (all good quality lightweight battery suppliers) have Japanese market dealers. I think at least one of them has its plant in China or Singapore. Try sending them emails, will be less expensive than the OEM and will perform better with less weight.

Please do not disgrace yourself. You must post pictures of your Porsche as soon as possible.

Hehehe...ok I'll promise to put a pic of my car up .

I managed to find a place that does batteries for Porsche at more reasonable prices approx USD$160 (including delivery). Maybe this will be useful for other Japan Porsche owners too (in Japanese - no I don't read it but I can speak broken Japanese) :-

http://www.nstbattery.com model #58043

I checked out :-
1) Moll - $220 - $310
2) Optima - $200 - $290
3) Odyssey - $300 - $400

Couldn't find pricing on Braille.

Considering the price of a battery vs. the price of a cross town cab in Tokyo, I would think a battery is a pretty good deal.

I did actually! I picked up the NST battery. When I paid for it, it was USD$50 cheaper than what they quoted on the phone! So I ended up paying $100 for it.
