Default Spare Key for 996

I do not mind spending money on what will improve the car, as I just ordered an x74 kit from Carnewal, but since the new semi new car only came with one key, I was shocked to get the pricing for a new spare from dealer.. Key with remote = $280 + 145 for programming. Key only $200 (no remote) Outch.. Is the programming only available at dealer? I just hate to dump $500 on a key. Suggestions?

If you loose the only key you have, the $500 will seem a bargain.

All cars with remotes should have two keys, and also know where the spare one is.

If the car is an early one, pre-03, the remote you have is probably the original. The circuit boards tend to break, so you might want to think of buying two remotes and one new blade and have it all programmed. The dealer should do this while you wait.

Key head/remote from Sunset Porsche 80 bucks, blade --around 20 bucks I think... local dealer 1/2 Hour to program.

Total around 200 bucks.

There was an earlier thread regarding the GT key conversion where I brought up my dilemma with this very issue. The dealer wanted a little more than $400 to produce a duplicate key.

Here's what I did (am doing): I bought the blank and remote key head from Suncoast ($20 for the blank, $129 for the remote head). I found a locksmith that can cut exotic keys (MBs, etc.) and he quoted me $80 to cut it. After that I will have one of the dealers in town (Pioneer in San Diego) program the PIN for $65. So this route should cost me under $300.

The trick was finding a locksmith to cut the blank - I would check online for someone in the area and start calling around - insist that you only need the key cut (no one I called could do the electronic programming part). If you can find something like I did, that should save you about $200. (I went through this mess with my MB years ago and that cost me $150 - which became my price point... I about fell over when I totaled everything up to over $400 to have a dealer do it...)

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I ordered a spare key with remote from my dealer (Stead Porsche in Walnut Creek, CA). The service manager told me that he considered the reprogramming of the key to be part of the purchase price. The tech came out to my car with a laptop and reprogrammed the key while I waited - no extra charge.

I think it's a bit of a scam for the dealer to charge labor for the reprogamming, it's a 5 minute job.

Default a rip-off I agree

Thank all, I have dealt with remotes and reprograming of key in cars in the past, but paying $145 for 5 mins after already shelling out close to $300 for a key & remote.. I think the guys at The Collection in Coral Gables just lost a customer.

The programming of the key should be part of the cost.

PS: I called Aaron at SunCoast and he can sell me the blank, the remote all for about $116. Right price. Then need to find someone that would cut & program.

My next call will be to call Porsche of Naples where the PIP waqs done to see.. Menatime, enjoying the ride.

Ooos, forgot.. my x74 suspension arrived.
