Default Advice on 996 Purchase

I've been a Rennlist member for several years, more lurking than posting, and I need some advice. I sold my 1990 944 Cab in August 2007 and have recently been looking for a replacement. I've found a 2001 996 Cab at a Porsche dealer, but not close. I left a small deposit to hold it until I can get there on Saturday. Here's what it is:

2001 996 Cab 6spd
Metallic Paint to Sample (Close to Colbalt Blue)
Graphite Gray Full Leather Interior
3 Spoke Leather Steering Wheel
Porsche Stability Management
Power Seat Package
Porsche Crest in Headrest
18” Sport Classic Wheels/Tires
Club Coupe Specification 249 (Not sure what this is)
Design Package
21k Miles / 1 Owner
Clean PPI

It's not CPO, but does have a 3yr/36k mile aftermarket warranty. We settled on $28.9k.

Any Thoughts? Thanks.

Sounds like a great deal. I have a '99 996 with higher miles and I paid more a year ago - a sign of the times.

Enjoy!

Bob

PS - That is one beautiful S2 Cab.

Looks like a pretty fair deal if that price includes the warranty. I think there are a lot of reasons to go for a 2002 + car, but those features aren't important to everybody. If the car is everything you want, go for it!

Should be able to get it cheaper. Take a closer look at trade-in prices

Sounds like a great deal! 21K miles and only one owner? I paid a lot more than that about six weeks ago, with a lot more miles and two previous owners. For comparison purposes, I also bought a 5 year, 150K mile aftermarket powertrain warranty for $2K. I'm in So. Cal, so that might make a little bit of a pricing difference (my guess is higher here), but I would almost (almost) have buyer's remorse if I saw your deal in my area.

That is great deal. Especially getting it directly from a Porsche dealer. That is what I did too. Mine had one owner too, and also had 21K miles on it. I only got a 2 year warranty however. Jump on it.

A good deal is a "state of mind"

If you have done the homework, the car cheacks out and it feels right.... DO IT !
There will always be another deal to compair with, but dont look back, trust in your own judgement and use the best info you have available at the time. Then even if things dont work out, you know inside you did the best you could. Its often easy looking back to see where we made good and bad choices, but not so for looking forward...

A good car is more imprtant than the best possible price. However, with a custom color, how would you be able to specify it so a paint shop could match it?

I have special paint... takes a long time to get (from germany). But should not be a problem.

Thanks for all the input.

rotokim - Thanks for the compliment on the S2. It was a great car. Black over Linen w/ 45k miles. Sometimes I regret selling it.

I thought the biggest differences between the 2001 & 2002+ were the styling and less problems with IMS failure on the 3.6 vs. 3.4. Are there other major differeneces I'm overlooking?

Typically what I've been seeing in my area for a 2001, 1-owner car with 21k miles is $35k-$40k. That's one reason I am willing to travel for this one. At one point, I actually was worried it was too cheap and something is wrong with it.

ivangene - That's a great way of looking at it because you know as soon as you make the deal, a better one always comes up.

The special paint does concern me a little. Not sure how you would even touch up rock chips, much less anything bigger. Does anyone know if there's a way of getting the color info, maybe directly from Porsche?

I think you could do much better at Carmax. Try a search.

^^^ What he said.

I went through this process myself a few weeks ago. Found a car; thought it was priced high so I shopped around; then realized as I did more shopping, the first car I found was actually everything I wanted, plus CPO, plus just down the road. I may have paid more than what someone else might have been willing to pay, but in the end, I got the car I wanted with the options I wanted and everything else fell into place.
