Default How did your notice your clutch is wearing out?

I met up with a guy from our local Porsche forum today. The idea was to drive each others identical Porsches to discuss about the differences. Soon after a couple of accelerations I noticed that his car charges forward significantly quckier than mine when shifting form the 1st gear to second. It was pretty easy to hear the rear tires squeak when releasing the clutch. His car just had RMS fixed and while they were at it he had the clutch redone too.

When driving back from the meeting I tried the same with my own car and realised my clutch must be slipping. The power transmits to rear wheels much too softly. Absolutely no feeling of getting kicked on the back when shifting to second gear with high revs.

Is it the clutch or can it be something else? In normal driving my clutch is fine, a bit stiffer than my friends though.

My car is 1999 Carrera 2 manual, 50 tmiles.

edit: Identical cars, tire sizes, everything exept his car has M030 sport suspension and over 70tmiles more on the odo.

hmmm, interesting thing to do........
to tell if your clutch is slipping use a high gear at low speed and step on the gas hard....if the engine revs higher than the acceleration... it's slipping.
His new clutch... stock?
There are many factors involved in this "feeling"... could be the tires, the tire pressure, Tire size, the motor (more HP from some mods, or your motor being tired) the clutch..(maybe not) ECU changes (ie, chipped), spark plugs, coils, air filter, suspension, fuel filter, injectors, on and on....

Check if your slips, if not, dont worry about it. Then start looking into a supercharger! That should do the trick!

The slip isnt that bad at all - yet. The slip is noticeable only when accelerating hard and shifting from 1st to second gear. I am not a big fan of race like starts (accelerating from zero) but maybe I should try it to see if the clutch really is slipping. If it is noticeably slipping when shifting from 1st to secon gear it sure should slip when accelerating hard from zero.

And yes, my friends car has a new stock clutch and no other mods except M030 suspension - which is something I plan next for my car...after having solved this clutch issue.

My clutch was really stiff and a bit grabby before it let go. The new clutch is easier and smoother. Other than that there was no warning at all, then it started slipping so badly I wasn't sure I would make it to the Indy.

My clutch and pressure plate were "absolutely shot" at 88k miles. I'm the original owner so I know there is no longstanding history of abuse. First I noticed rough engagement which progressively became worse. I thought it might be the throwout bearing. My mechanics said it was the entire clutch, and that it would start slipping eventually. I planned for the downtime by ordering some nice upgrades so I would have something to look forward to after being without my car. Weeks later it started slipping in 6th gear when gas was applied. My parts arrived, so I had my mechanics install a new clutch, factory GT3 wheels with summer rubber, ROW M030 sport suspension, paint the center console pieces, and replace the chipped windshield. My 5-spokes were repaired and refinished completely for dedicated winter use.

I was quite surprised by the "increase" in torque and horsepower after the clutch was replaced! It must have been slipping slightly all along, and very slightly getting worse over time.

(Don't ask for the logic of spending all that on a 4 year old, 88k mile car. I love driving the damn thing and don't know if I'll ever be able to sell it, even after I buy a new one. Crazy.)

This is the LAST place anyone would have an issue with that logic!

It sounds like the bare minimum to me.

My calf muscle on my left leg started to grow larger than my other calf. Meaning...Stiff feeling and grabby at the end. I know, sounds like a personal problem

That increase in torque and horsepower is exactly what I hope to explain the difference between my car and a co-forum member´s car´s performance. His 100.000 miles more driven car was quite a lot sharper and that sharpness was easy to detect when shifting gears on high revs.

One thing I have learned after becoming a p-car owner is that logic may be thrown out of the window. Decisions concerning Porsches are made by emotions, not by logic or common sense.

Life is short, ejoy it.
