Default Question About Intermix

Hello all,

My motor experienced the intermix issue 3 weeks ago, and has since been sitting at the dealer collecting dust. Long story very, very short, did any of you guys who has had to replace the motor due to intermix have to replace EVERY hose/radiator, and anything in contact with coolant when it went out? Or did they just flush the system? My dealer wants to charge an additional $3000+ for hoses/radiators and two full pages of parts.

Seems, a bit extreme, and from what I have read not necessary as long as the system is fully flushed. Thank you in advance.

dont have intermix issues..... but this is the first that I have heard that the dealer are to replace all coolant hose and radiator.... hell, while there at it why dont they replace all oil lines too, new oil cooler, air oil seperator, coolant tank... etc, since it is an intermix... sounds like prison inter-activity to me.

I think they are being lazy about not finding all the possible intermix points, although at today's dealer labor rates who knows, might be cheaper to replace everything than have someone rooting around in there for countless hours at $150+/hr trying to figure out what's really wrong. That much work, I would go to an indy, the parts aren't really THAT expensive.

I hear this more and more from people who have any type of mechanical problem in a modern car, instead of repair the first (dealer/shop) recommended solution is replacement. OK I'd better get off the soapbox now!

Thanks to the both of you for responding. Yes, I too believe they are jerking me around....like I said I gave the very very short story as I know how often we see threads about how our motors blow up.
I will however dive into a short story, as I actually received a phone call today from the dealer. They asked if I would rather have my motor rebuilt to save cost, with the two year unlimited mile warranty, instead of replacing the whole motor...I thought that was a no no, or couldn't be done, so it caught me off guard.

rebuild?... what is the diagnosis?.... how do they determine where the failure was w/o teardown. It sound like they want the labor costs... parts are cheap.

Sorry, I should have clarified what the actual cause was. The dealer stated after a further investigation into the intermix (don't know how far the tear down went, but the motor was removed) that it was the drivers side? cylinder head. So, they want to completely tear down the entire motor, and rebuild all of the internals. It will also consist of 1 new cylinder head as well, tho old one that did not go out will be reused. The warranty they are offering (2 year) has me feeling fine, it's just the longevity/reliability of the rebuild that I'm concerned with after the warranty.
I have not ruled out going to an Indy shop, as a matter of fact I am more than likely going to be doing that. The reason I opted for the dealer first was because I bought a CPO car.....they day they rolled the car on to the show room (and I mean backing it in) I decided to purchase it. It had the pretty little CPO sticker on the windshield, and I got told all the reasons why it was priced the way it was do to the CPO (it went through the whole process of being certified, plus all the 60,000mile work, all on record).
Now here's the fun part. Porsche has no record of the car being CPO. Yes, the can see all the work had been done and they did point it out, but it had not been completed in the Porsche records. SO I HAVE NO CPO!!! Yes, I could have probably avoided this, so it sucks on my part. But the dealer dropped the ball as well when it came time to send the paperwork to Porsche.
Thus, my car still sits at the dealer...while I prepare the lawyer bat. OK, sorry, rant over, guess you got a little longer version to this mess

Get your *** to a lawyer tomorrow! Explain the facts to him and have him fire off a threatening letter right away. You have cause against either Porsche NA or the dealer where you got the car. Is this dealer you bought the car from the same one where the car sits?

same thing happened to me when i first took my car in to fix a window regulator , the original dealer hadn't processed the CPO paperwork. Porsche will make it right, if you bought a car that was CPO and it was priced into your deal and the paperwork shows it, they will put you into the system as CPO, it's a common issue. Talk to your regional PCNA people and make a BIG deal out of it. Have all of your paperwork together.

I had the dredged intermix problem and had my engine replaced by Porsche. They did not replace any hoses but they did remove the radiators and sent them to a specialist to have them thoroughly cleaned out.

When I was shopping for my 996, there was one I was interested in that had a replaced engine. I got the dealer to fax me all the service records and sure enough, with engine replacement (intermix was the cause) they replaced both radiators and most cooling system parts, an extra $2-3K.
A bit pricey, but not a bad idea.....
