Default braise welding or TIG?

i'm thinking of doing the MK1 mod to my 3.4L cans. looking at the photos of others who have done it, my father in law (experienced machinist, etc.) thinks he could braise weld the pipes rather than tig weld them.

anyone try it that way? what do the experienced welders think?

If he's good at it, it should work fine. He's just using flame to make the heat to melt the metal rather than an electric arc to melt the metal.

The advantages of TIG are: a) more concentrated heat for a smaller heat effected area (really only matters for heat treated metals or assemblies that have melt-able or flammable components); and b) the shielding gas of TIG decreases impurities and oxidation in the weld - which will make the weld slightly stronger.

Give FisterD a PM...he's a master welder and has done a bunch of these mods....including mine for my 99C2 and a bunch of 993's and 996's. He uses different sizes of stainless and can do the J mod as well as the MKI and MKII mods.

I believe he MIG'd also.

Brazing will work fine, it looks ugly compared to TIG welds.
