BMC, K&N or stay with stock filter

I'm considering changing my stock air filter to either a BMC or K&N. Not a big cost, but curious if it's worthwhile - any change in performance or sound? Any downside? Is one better than the other (BMC is more expensive)? Not looking to go with a CAI. I have the RSS plenum installed. Any thoughts appreciated.

It certainly doesn't hurt. I went with the BMC because I found a good deal on it, but K&N is probably fine too. No change in sound. In the past I've measured significant differences in power with K&N over paper filter but that was in a turbo application so the difference was probably magnified. On an NA engine I'd expect you make make another hp or two but nothing to write home about.

Go on ebay and order the red intake tube from Vertex. They have this new option where you can make an offer, just like the buy it now tab. You can even add the K&N filter for 69$.

I went with BMC myself and "definitely felt a difference." Seriously, it might be worthwhile if you have an aftermarket exhaust, tuned ECU, etc, but I don't think it matters as much as you think it will. You're probably better off just remembering to change your stock paper filter every year.

As Tippy mentioned. Do a search on K&N filters or better yet, MAF failures. I wouldn't recommend the K&N on a 996. I run K&N on my Tundra and my 964, but too many people have had MAF failures using the K&N on 996's.
The only thing that I feel it will give you is better sound.

We're talking about just filter panel replacements, right? Not the entire cone/cold-air kit?

Thanks guys. I have the Softronic tune as well as the plenum. Not sure about the aftermarket exhaust yet ... stock allows some spirited driving w/o attracting as much attention ![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
I read the issues on the K&N CAI so had decided not to go that route and keep the stock air box. But it appears to be an issue with their flat panel replacment filters as well?

As I understand the issue, it's the oil used to activate the filter, to it would be an issue with CAI or just the flat panel filter.
Personally, I think there's enough smoke to indicate fire on this problem.
