Default Does your 911 run out of steam near redline?

I tried searching for some answers to this... but it was difficult to come up with a decent search string...

Coming from a Honda S2000 and spending a lot of time in M3s... I'm used to engines that pull harder and harder the closer they get to redline. I feel that my C4S pulls very hard, but as it nears the upper rev ranges, it starts to loose its breath.

Anyone else feel this way? TB cleaning needed? Could it just be the 95degree Houston weather?

Thanks and happy motoring.

Yes, I remember mine could of shifted a little sooner to help acceleration, maybe 200-400 RPMs (it was a Tip).

Don't forget the high humidity of Houston too.

But, I think the E46 M3's (if that's what you are referring to) fall on their face too before redline.

Might be something like your TB cleaning.

Mine pulls hard enough I have to pay attention to the gage when driving hard... no sense I'm at redline until the limiter tells me.

I think most cars have a decline in power as you approach redline. The peak horsepower is usually hit before redline...

Actually, E36 - that car just gets angrier as it revs on. The S2000 as well - it pulls strong all the way up. I just feel like my 996 feels a little flat at the top...

I just assumed these cars performed best when shifted at redline, but perhaps not... When do you all shift when running wot?

I have found that shifting just before redline is the best. In this manner you will maintain your RPM's in the maximum bell curve for both HP and torque and will acutally accelerate better than if you shifted at or beyond redline. And remember if you do go into the redline the rev limiter will kick in as a protection. At least this happens on my 997S. Best RPM shift for me is between 6700-6800. Within that band she truly is a monster.

6800 is the peak rpm. I try to shift in the 6600-6800 area when running WOT.

I bet they do!!

I think this costs over 7K to do as an "aftermarket" add-on...

My '99 runs out of power only if I hit the rev limiter. It pulls hard and strong and I can't tell redline is approaching unless I look at the tach. I've had years of racing experience so I'm used to making use of all the high end power a motor will put out. I think the early 996s have a different feel (good) as far as throttle response and power delivery and also, they are lighter.

Isn't the TT's redline only 6400rpm?

mine runs to 7000 strongly and only gets stronger. make sure your cam sensors are switching..... I had this happen and the car was dead after 4 or 5 grand gutless, it was fixed easily and runs fine.

ok stupid question (since this is my first 911)... i like the sound, and i hope (think) its normal, but the engine gets really raspy near redline... is this typical?
