On a different topic: there is some merit to leaving the spare in (i.e., structural integrity). This is "confirmed" in a TSB from Porsche related to the boxster. But your 99 has the same front end, so I would assume it applies...
Ok, I did the search for you. There is an exact thread on this way back in 2004. Note the almost identical titles using "spare tire bolt" in your search.

Thanks for the search. I did try but I didn't use removing bolt and I got a lot of non applicable responses.
I did move the bolt to the passenger side without success. I think I will leave it in place in case I change my mind. One never knows.
