I just bought an 04 996 cab and the battery is dead - I noticed that the engine lid light is on even when the lid is shut completely.
Is there a switch somewhere that is keeping this light on? Any ideas what gives? I looked in the manuals but couldnt find anything related and I could not find the switch near the lid that turns this light on and off....
Any help or guidance would be appreciated. Thank you!!

unplug the lightbulb
... btw, the switch is attached to the latch mechanisim. Try this test: open the lid... use a screwdriver to push down on the latch (hook) mechanism and see if the light turns off. Dont forget to unlock it before closing the lid.

Your engine lid light will stay on as long as your trunk lid remains open. If the trunk is open, the engine light remains on also. If you open your engine lid but keep the trunk lid closed, the engine light should go off as soon as the engine lid is closed. This is the way my 04 C2 Cab has worked since the day I bought it new.
Did you have your trunk open when you noticed the engine lid light would not go off? If so, that is the reason.

My new/to me, 99 Carrera had this same problem. What I did was put a small toggle switch in line with the light and I now turn the light 'ON' when I need it. By the way, I also did this with the engine light.
Just a thought,

Same as what MikeA996 said, you must have had the front trunk lid open.
That had me puzzled once and I eventually figured it out.
When I have to work on the car and leave either the front or engine lids open, I disconnect the lights.
