The threads in the aluminum hub strip when the bolts are removed. This is not all that uncommon. To fix it you put in a time-sert. It can be fixed with the hub on the car.

Hi- I'm about to try and undo my caliper bolts although after hearing this its made me a bit nervous. How common is this? I have a 98 996 and don't know if the calipers have ever been off. I was wondering if it would help to spray something like WD 40 on them beforehand and let it soak in so as to ease the undoing?

I PB Blast most parts a day before I work on my cars. A very thin amount of antiseize between steel and aluminum parts is always a safe bet.
