This helps. Any idea what the color is from the code (the car is a black metallic, but it is not basalt and is not like others I have seen, but obviously factory)? I can't find anything on that. Also, what does special instructions (code 999) mean? Do many cars have special instructions? I am trying to figure out how "special order" my car was. It does seem fairly unique for a 996.

Looks like L744 is an equivalent code for Z8, which is Black Metallic.
Not to be confused with Basalt Black Metallic, Z8 has gold and brown undertones rather than blue.
My 98 Boxster was this color, and a friend once described it as looking like "Root Beer".

what about code 999. How many p owners have 999 as part of their option list. Could that be the Aero body. I know mine is factory, but the code on the reference charts are not part of my option list?
