Unhappy Locking problem / Key

Hi Guys,
When leaving the car at the station this morning, I pulled the keys out of the ignition and the central interior light didn't come on... I thought no big deal maybe it's acting up. Anyways, I leave the car and then try and use the key to lock it and nothing happens! I try my wife's key and get the same result. The light on the dash is flashing away when the key is pressed and if I lock the driver’s door only the driver’s door locks and the horn sounds to warn me that the passenger door is open.

If I sit in the car and use the central locking button on the dash all doors lock and unlock as normal... I just cannot lock the car from the outside!
I've now left the car at the station with only the driver’s door locked as I had no option (work and all!).

Also, while I remember, I tried to put the key in the ignition after first trying to lock and unlock the doors with the key and it wouldn't go in... is this all related to a ignition fault which seems to be a common fault on the 996 (by reading the threads on this forum)?

I'm going to be going to the local Porsche Indi later today to try and get this sorted but I was hoping someone out there in Rennlist land may be able to help.
Cheers,

Martin

I never heard anything like it.
Let us know.
And how about some pictures of your car?

Hi John,
Thanks for the welcome! The car is going to the Indie this afternoon and I'm hoping it's just a fuse etc but I bet it's not going to be as simple as that! I've had a real run of issues with my 996 lately and it's costing me a fortune!
If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Cheers,

Martin

Porsche will replace the complete ignition switch with a new unit (different part number) which is a revised design.

or, you can buy an Audi part for just the electrical switch that fits onto the back of the physical ignition switch, and do a DIY at a lower cost - but with potentially the same failure many years down the line..
