Agreed. I can't see how leaving the car unlocked drains battery. I 'can' see how leaving the ignition in the car without first pulling it out all the way and then reinserting 'does' drain the battery more quickly.
On a somewhat related note, I found out that if I close the car door, then pull the key out, then walk away without locking the car, all the interior lights will stay lit for over 2 hours. To make sure all the interior lights go out after a 30 second delay either remove the key before closing the car door, or lock the car as you walk away.
Why would you leave the key in the ignition in the first place? That's the first place a thief will look in your garage. Better to stick it under a mat if you must leave it in the car at all.

I leave the keys to all three cars in my garage in the center console so I don't have to wonder where I left them. I guess I'm not real worried that somebody is going to break into my house and steal my cars.
