What were the main engineering differences between the 3.4l and 3.6l engines used on 996's? I believe that the 3.6 used a different variocam system. Any other differences, for example in oil feeds? Are the 3.6l engines less likley to suffer oil surge/starvation issues than the 3.4l engines, and if so, why?

Granted, not every 3.4l engine does this, but I've never heard of a 3.6l engine (or the smaller engines in the Boxsters) doing this.
A UK published car magazine 911 & Porsche World or GT and Purely Porsche (I think I have that name right...) and Excellence published here in the USA run the occasional 996 buyers guide and cover changes year to year from the early 3.4l engines to the 3.6l engines and changes to the cars as well.
If you can't find the info you seek elsewhere, picking up a back issue or two could supply you with the info you seek.
Sincerely,
Macster.
