Wow! That must be an reverse discount. I have to replace one of my keys as the transmitter went bad. The key was less than $200 and it was only half an hour of labor to program it. Granted I did get a discount, but even at full pop It would not have been over $350.

Additional info:

It was actually cheaper than I stated earlier. The key head was $112.71 (it is $132.60 retail) and it was $64 for the 1/2 hour labor. My total was $191.29 with tax. If I were Achillies, I would be having a serious discussion with that service department.

I just had my car serviced today and I had one key not working and was quoted 155.00 for the key and 115.00 to program - I decided to wait till next service but I thought it was high.

Damnation, $495 for a key? Some of these dealers are going to rot in hell.

Spend $36 and get this first. It will make the visit to the dealer much more pleasant!

Default Fob

I had the opportunity to visit a lock smith recently regarding my front door Yale lock. During some conversation I asked him about programing car key fobs. Mentioned that dealers are charging an arm and a leg, especially high end foreign car dealers. I mentioned that it might be a source of revenue for him to look into it and charge a more reasonable rate. He said his son had actually done the research (on the web), bought a replacement fob (on the web) and was able to re-program the new fob with the information he got off the web! His son wasn't there to talk with directly. My point is: He said this information was available on the web. We should get on this one as the dealers are charging WAY too much.
Perhaps Tim can help all of us out by starting a Fob key service.

You are in luck. Go to Circle Porsche in Long Beach. Ask for Alberto (tech serv.) tell him that Peter (Red Cab) recommended. He can gives you really good price on it. By the way, he's a wonderful guy to deal with. GL!

Peter, a "really good price" would be defined as....????

I'm sorry I can't disclose the amount. It's more of individual deal. The lowest quote I got from anyone was $140 and I paid much less.

Tim. Thats what I needed when I had my 30k service. As a matter of fact 55 gals. wasn't enough. Does anyone in So Cal. have a mechanic that does quality work without wanting to bend you over? It's crazy what these people charge. I can't believe they have the ***** to ask for that much.

I figured it was probably an "individual deal" thing, but that does narrow the range somewhat. Thanks.

I paid ~180 recently at Bluegrass Porsche in Louisville. They matched Sunset Porsche prices.
