I'm a little embarrassed to ask...

How do you take the exhaust tips off?

+1. There are a number of good aluminum/SS cleaners on the market that are non-abrasive and do a great job at cleaning up carbon staining and pitting.

W - I haven't heard of, or used this stuff. Is it non-abrasive and good for SS tips? Where can I buy it?

One bolt (collar clamp) on each that is about 12" up the pipe where they attach to the cans. Tips are actually welded to a short section of exhaust pipe, all comes out as one. Mark the clamp and pipes with chalk or paint marker so you can line them back up properly and avoid the embarrassing "sagging tips" dilemma.

I used to use Neverdull, but started using Mother's Billet Alum Polish. Works great!

I really appreciate it, gregorycarl. I would have been pretty frustrated if the tail pipes didn't look right after working on them.

This is true only for the early cars. In 02 and later cars, the stainless finisher tip is held to the lower exhaust pipe by a single bolt instead of being welded. Remove the bolt and the finisher tip slides off.

Gotcha. I'm in a 2000. And yes, I did have sagging tips syndrome at one point.

Is it safe to use the Billet Aluminum Polish on SS tips? I'm concerned that if it has abrasive in it, it could scratch them.

Sorry for the delayed response... been up in VT playing in the snow for a few days.

I bought it from PepBoys. It's non abrasive and works really well. I've been very happy with how well it removes the tarnish from my SS tips.
