Question What could it be?

So backing out of my driveway I have to make a turn not a sharp turn I hear a slipping noise from the front end. I decided to test it out in a parking lot and no matter what side I turn to I get this "slipping/thumping" noise from the frontend. Anyone out there have any ideas as to what the could be it would be of great help.

Thanks in advance.

That means your summer performance tires are frozen. Be careful and make sure they warm up first before you try and Fast and the Furious type maneuvers.

It seemed to be a more of a mechincal thing. This even seems to happen when tires are warm and weather is "warm". Could it this all just come from the "tires" being cold? I didn't have this issue with the Boxster in the same weather with the same tires just 17's V 18's.

I have an indoor, underground garage at home where the temp stays above 40 -- no problems. But when I park the car outside for an extended period when it is really cold out and back out of the parking spot I get the same slipping/thumping feel/sounds. Pirelli P-Zero Rosso Assimetricos are crap in really cold weather.

Try R-compounds and AWD in cold weather. I stored my car with the nearly worn Cup tires and decided to drive the car out when the roads were clear but temps were single digits. I thought the front end was falling off there was so much thumping!! Got better as the AWD and the tires warmed up.

I guess my question is if it was the tire's won't the thumping happen when I was driving straight too? This only happens when the wheels are turning while reversing.

sharply to one side or the other. Best to shut off engine however, to lessen wear/tear on power steering.

To save you the trouble, here's a link to a picture I took when I did this with my car:

Note how front tires -- especially the one on the side towards the direction the wheels are turned -- are not flat on the ground but are riding on their inside edges.

Backing up on anything but warm tires on sticky/grippy pavement will almost always see the front tires slip/skid a bit and do so in such a way that some thumping/rather harsh vibrations will result.

I've even felt some of this making a sharp -- full lock -- turn at low speed on slick pavement. Sort of feels like ABS kicking on except in some cases I don't have the brakes applied.

Sincerely,

Macster.
