A small gas powered 2 seater that the Ferdster built.

I knew it was because Porsche drivers were busy with their other hand...

Ok. we have a winner. Not the full answer but that's ok.

It was the "Ferry Christmas Bicylinder", with a 2 speed air cooled engine and it was a Scale version (a miniature replica) of the Austro Daimler Model «Prince Henry».

Hey, cut me some slack, I read Ferry's book like 10 years ago!

I've known the reasoning behind it's current location, and I put about 12 seconds of thought into this whole thing, and have come to a ground-breaking conclusion.

I think the left-side ignition switch actually makes it SLOWER to get in and start the car.

I have to switch the keys to my left hand after opening my door. I don't want to scratch the car so I keep my keys in the right hand while opening it with the left. It would too be awkward to open it with my right hand.

I'm afraid your theory have a big flaw: in yesterday Le Mans races they didn't opened the car doors. They jumped over the doors and dive on it.

Don't worry about the paint. In those days they raced without it
