Just for comparison, I had a B & M clone on my 99' 986 5-spd,loved the feel. I'm now considering doing it to my 01' 996 c2 w/ 37k and 01' 986 S w/52 on it,both 6-spd. The c2 and S should have the same exact tranny,neither has ever popped out of 2nd gear.
I'm concerned with the 2nd gear popping out issue more on these trannys more then anything. Does installing a OEM(or B & M) SSK raise the chances of this happening?
How many of you guys have regretted putting in the SSK on your 6-spd due to how notchy it is?
Sorry I had to post this,I haven't riden in a 6-spd that had a SSK.
There are a ton of posts on this issue on the 996 - do a search and you'll find that virtually everyone, myself included, who have replaced the stock shifter with a SSK, have not regretted their decision. I put an OEM shifter with a shift link in shortly after getting the car - no regrets at all - the action is short, direct and almost bolt action. Never slips out of 2nd or other gears.
I really like my SSK. As Phil said, the action is short and direct. Very efficient.
Tim, that's the nicest thing you've ever said in response to one of my comments. Why not something like "how would he know - he's never had it out of first gear?" Happy Thanksgiving - have a healthy!!
Cannot imagine why Porsche does not include SSK as standard equipment. If anyone has trouble with this shifter, they probably should have bought an automatic.
What....no arguments and poking fun at each other? Phil and Tim...can this be true? Funny stuff. Yes....I also highly highly recommend a short shifter. Really changes the entire feel of the car. Eric at www.bumperplugs.com has the best price I know of.
Thanks I appreciate the input. Looks like I know what I will get my Dad for X-mas(the c2 is his).
Great gift for a Porsche enthusiast - it's a DIY, too (except for us tech-impaired folks). I paid <$800 for the OEM SSK, Evo shift link, and labor from a dealer. Job was done perfectly, no issues or regrets. Great mod for these cars. I agree with the comment that SSK should absolutely be standard equipment in these cars.

the 2nd gear pop out is a TT issue, if you read that the 996 has this issue, it is an isolated account.
feels notchy and sometimes misses from 2-3 gear but No regrets!
I love mine as well. A SSK kit with complimenting exhaust is pure bliss. The only reson for 2nd gear pop out would be that when installing the SSK, the cables may not have been adjusted correctly. When I installed my SSK, I rode around for a week with the center console off to fine tune it. The notchiness goeas away after about a month or so of use, the first few days it feels like some say "handgun trigger" effect.

Well, I've stuck my foot (feet) in my mouth twice in the last two days so I am on a bad roll. I didn't want to push my luck.

You paid WHAT??????????
Man, I would have come up there to install it for you. You could have bought me a round trip plane ticket, bought me dinnner and still would have spent less than $800. On top of that, you would have had the pleasure of my company for half a day!
Man, did you miss out on the opportunity of a life time!
Yeah, I know I overpaid, but what the hell. It's done and works great. As for the round trip ticket and dinner for <$800, only one question ... "would you like fries with that?"
