OT: Buying CPO - Maximize Value
#16
I have gone the Audi CPO route seveal times. The latest was a 2006 A4 with Stasis kit (about $6000 extra in brakes, wheels and suspension). The car only had 8,000 miles on it when I bought it. It came with the remainig 3 years of the original new car warrantly including free service and then an addional 2 years up to 100,000 miles. KBB said the retail value of the car without the statis kit was about $3000 more than I paid. Those are the kind of deals you need to find.
As far as resale value of Audi's, they are not quite as good as BMW. The Wall Street Journal has an article today though that shows the Audi listed as 9th best for resale at 42.6% after five years. Number 1 on the list was VW at 48.1%. BMW came in second at 45.6%. 3rd and 4th went to Acura and Honda. Porsche came in at 5th place with 44.9% Subaru, Lexus, and Infiniti filled in the space between Porsche and Audi. Toyota came in 10th after Audi. Still a 3% point difference between Audi and BMW in not really a big deal.
Basically you should find the best deal you can with the kind of car you want. The more and longer the warranty the better off you will be.

also when you get an older car the less of a difference you will see between the trim lines.
in 98 you could get a 528i for ~40k. The sticker on my V8 540i sport was 55k.
when they were both 6 years old in 2004 you could get the 540's for ~17-19k or you could get a 528i for ~15-17k. it was a no brainer for me. lots more options and way more torque. 3.5 years later and 100k more miles and my car is worth less than half what I paid for it. Fine with me. It cost me 10,000 bucks to put 100k miles on it. The first guy that put 80k on it at a cost of ~38k!!!
