Holy crap don't drill a hole in the winshield.
It doesn't work as well in winter because the air is dry. Either do the custom headliner mount, or what tooloud said.

Call me nuts, but I just hit the windshield with the defroster to warm it up, then lick the suction cups to get them to stick to the glass. Never had a problem down to -10F or so, but it might depend on your detector--I use a V1 and the suction cup system seems better than most.
BTW, don't use these tricks on a date, unless you are trying to avoid a second date. On the other hand, if you date has oily skin, maybe you can ask her for some nose grease. Heh, heh, heh. My wife is forever scraping the back of the radar detector across my face while I'm driving.
