Holy crap don't drill a hole in the winshield.
It doesn't work as well in winter because the air is dry. Either do the custom headliner mount, or what tooloud said.

Nice! While we're on the topic of using body fluids, I've found that spit can freeze and then the suction fails. Another option is to use the oil from your forehead or the side of your nose which works down to a lower temperature.

BTW, don't use these tricks on a date, unless you are trying to avoid a second date. On the other hand, if you date has oily skin, maybe you can ask her for some nose grease. Heh, heh, heh. My wife is forever scraping the back of the radar detector across my face while I'm driving.
