Phil, I can totally understand where you're coming from, but the carpet mats aren't attached. I have them vacuumed weekly and shampooed monthly. That should allay any concerns you'll have about bad smells. Frankly, as some have mentioned, the rubber smell from winter mats often strikes me as toxic.

UPDATE: I found this enlightening video online. Gee, the things you can find on the internet these days.

The only problem with these mats is that they are really heavy.
Hi, I ran across this thread while searching for comments on Weathertech mats.

I have a non-pcar for which I am considering the rubber mats because it will see lots of winter usage (think soggy, muddy boots). I am thinking about the Weathertech "digital fit" because

1) the seem to be shaped a little like "pans" - i.e. the perimeter of the mat forms a lip.

2) in the rear, the mat is a 1-piece mat that goes across the transmission tunnel. The OEM rubber mats are only mats for the footwells proper and I don't want to constantly nag the kids to not step on the carpet with muddy boots

Has anyone tried Weathertech's Digital Fit mats? Are they "hefty"? I ask because on a previous car I bought used, the PO had put in all-weather mats that were about the thickness of 3 or 4 paint-tray-liners stacked on top of each other. They did the job but looked flimsy. From Weathertech's website it is hard to tell whether the mats are "hefty".

Thanks in advance.

OEM mats are cheap, I picked up a brand new set of 4 from the dealer for like $100... I took my "old" ones out and sprayed the crap out of them with scothguard (phew they stunk for a week too but I left them out of the car till the smell went away) then just use them... in the summer I will toss in the new mats I already bought...

That or cover them with duct tape so they stay clean?
