Question Oil Filter Wrench - What size?

I know that most of us say that size does not matter, but in the case of the Oil Filter Wrench, it does.

Can anyone give me the Oil Filter Wrench size I need so I can change my oil tomorrow. I don't want to drive 35 miles to the dealer to pick up a Porsche Oil Filter Wrench.

Thanks!

Just buy a self adjusting strap wrench with a right angle handle - works like a charm, and you can use it on other cars as well - no ****

Yes Timmy.....I went to Wallmart and for less than 6 bucks, I bought a complete set of the metal end-cap oil filter with a socket drive receptacle. They come in a blister pack with 4 orf 5 different sizes ....I guess you'd call them sort-of sockets kuz they fit over the end of the filter....anyway, one of them fits the Porsche...the others just hang around in the tool box till someoneone with a Toyota or Ford needs one.

Chuck, I got my oil at Wal MArt, but didn't see the mulit-pack blister pack. Advance Auto Parts and Auto Zone had different sizes but not knowing the correct size I was wasting my time.

The same filter tool I use on my 2000 5 series works on the 996 FWIW.

THanks to everyone for the holp on the oil filter wrench. I did my first oil change today on the 996. In fact, it was my first oil change on ANY car.

Removed the drain plug, mowed the back yard while the oil drained. Then I reinstalled the drain plug (including new crush washer), torqued to 37 ft pounds. Removed old filter, installed new filter in the canister, applied new "O" ring, torqued to 19 ft. pounds and added 8.5 quarts of oil. Right now it is 1 bar low, which is right where I want it.

Thanks again guys! I $aved about 110 buck$ from la$t $tealer oil change.

Umm - prolly not a big deal, but the filter element is fitted onto the engine, before the filter housing is screwed on. Just in case someone searches some time down the road and finds this thread.

Yeah, I read that in a couple of threads & DYI's but and I also read you can put the filter in the housing and push it down until it "clicks" into place, which is what I did.

Is there any real difference between the two methods? Is one way right and one way wrong?
