Default New method to put PSE in All-time Sport Mode

When I picked up my new C4S with factory PSE, the dealer tech told me if I wanted to have the PSE in full time sport mode to just disconnect the black vacuum line from the switch/valve in the engine compartment rather than mess with the electornics. Most of the suggestions I've seen talked about cutting the diode or pulling the speed sensor wire.

Disconnecting the vacuum line seems to work fine. Wonder why no one has done this. Took all of 1 minute.

One problem. If you do that you lose the ability to turn it ON and OFF at will.

I modified mine to remove the speed cutout but retain the ON/OFF functionality.

The main reason many others did the electronic mod is because they wanted to be able to turn PSE on and off at will. Doing the electronic mod disables the automatoc "cut off" of PSE (even when it is on) that occurrs at approximately 30 to 45 MPH. THis cut off was added to comply with noise abatement laws in some countries (primarily Sweden).

I am on a German message board for Boxsters, where there are German and Swiss owners.

The Germans blame the Swiss for the drive-by noise law. Then the Swiss point their fingers at the Germans.

It's definitiely swiss, I lived there for a few years and they are kind of crazy about this stuff.

I once moved from Germany into Switzerland and brought a Merc ML over the border with me (I moved a couple of hundred miles). The paperwork I had to go through to import the car was unbelievable. They even make you clean the car engine until it is factory clean. I kid you not when I say the dealership actually had guys with toothbrushes cleaning the engine so that it would pass inspection.

Like I said, they are a bit crazy..........

We could always blame it on the French.

That would make the Germans, Swiss, and Swedes happy....

I've had my '03 C2 for about two months with factory PSE. I'd been reading about this topic and didn't notice any change in sound through the range in question. Yesterday I popped open the relay and discovered the previous owner had already snipped the diode. He must have been a renlister!

Default PSE switching alternatives

Unfortunately, you will induce a vacuum leak in the engine when it goes through the 35-45 mph range when you disconnect any of the PSE vacuum hoses, and not address the root cause, which is the speed signal allowing the PSE relay to go into quiet mode.

There are 2 "proper" ways to modify the PSE to get rid of the 35-45 mph quiet mode, that will not have any detrimental effects.

1. Disconnect the electrical connector on the PSE vacuum switch in the engine compartment. The downside of this is that manual control of the mufflers for is disabled.

2. Disconnect the Pink speed signal wire from the PSE relay plug on the relay support bracket under the drivers side of the dashboard. Without a speed signal, the relay does not operate the quiet mode at 35-45 mph. This method retains full control of the quiet mode via the dash switch, and does not damage any components.

Modifying the PSE relay by cutting components is not recommended.

I'll give a try to the electricl disconnect. I haven't noticed any effects of a vacuum leak although I did plug the connector where the vacuum line attaches in the engine compartment.
